Punching Nazis is something of a time honored tradition in the United States. So is making memes. It seems natural then that the Internet wouldn’t waste any time in making a video of white supremacist and neo-Nazi Richard Spencer getting punched in the face go viral. While the United States was late getting into WWII, ever since helping to defeat the Axis Powers, Americans have prided themselves on stories and myths about their heritage and its legacy in keeping fascism at bay. Here is Richard Spencer from last fall, speaking to a bunch of other white supremacists, and doing a bunch of Nazi stuff. In 2013, he wrote, “The ideal I advocate is the creation of a White Ethno-State on the North American continent.” He’s also called for “peaceful ethnic cleansing,” referred to Martin Luther King Jr. as “a fraud and degenerate” and a symbol of “white dispossession” which must be “overcome,” and thinks immigration is a “a last stand for white Americans.” Treated as the representative of a resurgent “alt-right” (read: white nationalists who believe in race science), Spencer first earned notoriety for his views thanks to interviews with established media outlets, like NPR. A bizarre profile in the magazine Mother Jones even went so far as to introduce him as the “Dapper white nationalist.” So upon seeing footage of the man getting absolutely decked, many people decided to offer up their best remixes of the video over social media. Not everyone is happy about the Internet’s reaction to 2017’s latest viral moment. After all, violence is violence, and as some have argued, living in a democracy and exercising free speech means vigorously debating and protesting non-violently.
